As part of the 14th International Sculpture Symposium within the Carpathian Sculpture Route project, Portuguese artist Thierry Ferreira presents the sculpture Poetic Amalgam—a work inviting reflection on the boundaries of contemporary sculptural practice and the dialogue among human, material, and space.

Realized from June 1 to 15 in Ukraine’s Transcarpathian mountains, the symposium brought together Ukrainian sculptor Natalia Leykina, Hungarian sculptor Éva Czibor, Romanian sculptor Eugen Petri, Polish sculptor Piotr Bies, Portuguese sculptor Thierry Ferreira, and Mexican sculptor Sabrina Coco. The works created during the event join the growing collection of the Carpathian Sculpture Route—a cultural itinerary now over 250 km long with 126 installed works in local communities, contributing to the region’s artistic heritage and identity.

Poetic Amalgam, measuring 200 × 60 × 60 cm and carved from sandstone, belongs to the Archaic Stone series and positions itself as a sculptural object that questions the discipline of sculpture, its symbolic codes, and its relationship with time and space. Far from traditional or monumental logic, the piece asserts itself as a device of thought and contemplation. Its three-dimensionality is explored in a fragmented and open manner, inviting the observer to physically walk around the piece and discover different readings from multiple perspectives—without any single view revealing the object’s totality.

Stone, as a primordial material, plays a symbolic and philosophical role: it is more than raw matter—it is an archive of memory, an inscription of time, and a matter of thought. As the artist notes, the sculpture “becomes a space of active archaeology, where past and present coexist in a state of constant updating.” Through the use of abstract forms, worn surfaces, and archaic materials, the work rejects direct representation and instead proposes a poetic experience, open to sensitive speculation.

Its dialogue with the surrounding space is also essential. The sculpture transforms the physical place into a symbolic territory, where the forms evoke tension between natural and built, chaos and order, fragment and totality. As the artist suggests, the work reflects on “the coexistence of the ephemeral and the eternal, material and meaning, visible and indecipherable.”

In a time marked by uncertainty and the constant presence of images of destruction—where “the seemingly normalized daily life mixes with brutal images of war”—Poetic Amalgam incorporates distorted shapes and twisted fragments, evoking “a new imagetic reality that magnets the real, transforming our spacetime into suspended time, where waiting for a normalized daily life silences voices, erases smiles, and empties the idea of a future.”

This year’s edition of the symposium took place, for the fourth time, at the “Polehyna Flower” sanatorium, which hosted the artists and offered ideal conditions for their work. As emphasized by Margarita Zahumenova, Deputy General Director of LLC “Constellation,” the event “transforms the site into an open‑air gallery, attracting the attention of visitors, tourists, and local residents.” Young people and students also had the opportunity to closely follow the creative process and see the transformation of stone blocks into monumental sculptures over two weeks.

No âmbito da 14.ª edição do Simpósio Internacional de Escultura, inserido no projeto Rota da Escultura dos Cárpatos, o artista português Thierry Ferreira apresenta a escultura Amálgama Poética — uma obra que convida à reflexão sobre os limites da prática escultórica contemporânea e o diálogo entre o ser humano, a matéria e o espaço.

Realizado entre 1 e 15 de junho na região montanhosa da Transcarpathia, na Ucrânia, o simpósio reuniu a escultora Natalia Leykina da Ucrânia, a escultora Éva Czibor da Hungria, o escultor Eugen Petri da Roménia, o escultor Piotr Bies da Polónia, o escultor Thierry Ferreira de Portugal e a escultora Sabrina Coco do México. As obras criadas durante o evento integram o crescente acervo da Rota das Esculturas dos Cárpatos — um itinerário cultural que já ultrapassa os 250 quilómetros e inclui 126 obras instaladas em comunidades locais, contribuindo para a valorização do património artístico e a identidade da região.

Amálgama Poética, com dimensões de 200 x 60 x 60 cm e executada em pedra Arenito, insere-se na série Pedra Arcaica e propõe-se como um objeto escultórico que questiona a própria disciplina da escultura, os seus códigos simbólicos e a sua relação com o tempo e o espaço. Longe de seguir uma lógica tradicional ou monumental, a obra afirma-se como um dispositivo de pensamento e contemplação. A tridimensionalidade é explorada de forma fragmentada e aberta, convidando o observador a percorrer fisicamente a peça e descobrir diferentes leituras a partir de múltiplas perspetivas — sem que nenhuma revele por completo a totalidade do objeto.

A pedra, enquanto material primordial, assume um papel simbólico e filosófico: é mais do que matéria bruta — é arquivo de memória, inscrição do tempo e matéria de pensamento. Como refere o autor, a escultura “transforma-se num espaço de arqueologia ativa, onde o passado e o presente coexistem num estado de constante atualização”. Através do uso de formas abstractas, superfícies desgastadas e materiais arcaicos, a obra recusa a representação direta e propõe antes uma experiência poética, aberta à especulação sensível.

O seu diálogo com o espaço envolvente é também essencial. A escultura transforma o lugar físico num território simbólico, em que as formas evocam a tensão entre o natural e o construído, entre o caos e a ordem, entre fragmento e totalidade. Tal como sugere o autor, a obra reflecte sobre “a coexistência entre o efémero e o eterno, a matéria e o significado, o visível e o indecifrável”.

Num tempo marcado pela incerteza e pela presença constante de imagens de destruição — em que “o quotidiano aparentemente normalizado se mistura com as imagens brutais da guerra” —, Amálgama Poética incorpora formas disformes e fragmentos contorcidos, evocando “uma nova realidade imagética que magnetiza o real, transformando o nosso espaço-tempo num tempo suspenso, onde a espera de um quotidiano normalizado silencia as vozes, apaga os sorrisos e esvazia a ideia de futuro.”

A edição deste ano do simpósio decorreu, pela quarta vez, no sanatório “Flor das Poloninas”, que acolheu os artistas e ofereceu condições ideais para o desenvolvimento das suas obras. Como destacou Margarita Zahumenova, Diretora Geral Adjunta da LLC “Constellation”, o evento “transforma o local numa galeria ao ar livre, atraindo a atenção de visitantes, turistas e residentes locais.” Jovens e estudantes tiveram ainda a oportunidade de acompanhar de perto o processo criativo dos artistas e assistir à transformação de blocos de pedra em esculturas monumentais ao longo de duas semanas.
